The main task of medieval philosophy was to test the claims of faith and reason. Faith claimed that an important part of the truth is divine invention, whether it is understood by the intellect or not, it has to be accepted. Early Christian thinkers accepted the concepts of faith and reason as integral. After this, philosophy was given a secondary position than religion and wisdom was made the slave of faith; In the end reason asserted its authority and the spheres of faith and reason were separated. The names of Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scots are of special importance in medieval philosophy. He was a prominent spokesman for both sides of the intense controversy between realism and nominalism. Thomas Aquinas held that some areas of knowledge are matters of faith; Nevertheless, the sense-given knowledge can tell something about the nature of the universe and the divine with the help of the basic laws which are present in the active intelligence of each one. Duns Scotus was of the view that all knowledge is confined to individuals.
